Ordinal numbers are numbers that show the order of a serious of nouns. Like cardinal number, ordinal numbers can also function as adjectives when they modify a noun. However, unlike cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers must match the noun they modify in gender and number. Oridinal numbers almost always go before the noun.

### Ordinal Numbers 1st-12th

Ordinal numbers 1st-12th are all unique and must be memorized. For 11th and 12th in Spanish,*decimoprimero*and

*decimosegundo*are also acceptable forms.

### Ordinal Numbers 13th-19th

Ordinal numbers 13th-19th are unique in that each is written as a single word. However, it's also acceptable to write these numbers as separate words. These ordinal numbers are formed using the following formula: multiple of ten (minus any written accents) + 1st-9th. 18th is the only ordinal number that does not follow this pattern since the -o is removed from*décimo*before adding

*octavo*. Consider the following examples:

- 13th - décimo + tercero = decimotercero
*(or décimo tercero)* - 15th - décimo + quinto = decimoquinto
*(or décimo quinto)* - 19th - décimo + noveno = decimonoveno
*(or décimo noveno)*

### Ordinal Numbers 21st-99th

Ordinal numbers 21st-99th are are simply written out as a two separate words. Consider the following examples.- 22nd - vigésimo + segundo = vigésimo primero
- 33rd - trigésimo + tercero = trigésimo tercero
- 98th - nonagésimo + octavo = nonagésimo octavo
