Months, Dates and Seasons in Spanish

Spanish has twelves months just like English. However, unlike English, months of the year are not capitalized in Spanish.

To say you're doing something "in" a certain month, use the Spanish preposition "en". Review the following examples.

We are going to Europe in April.
Vamos a Europa en abril.
Classes end in the month of May.
Las clases terminan en el mes de mayo.

Seasons

Here are the four seasons of the year (estaciones del año.)

In Spanish, articles are typically used with seasons. Consider the following examples.

In the United States, spring begins in April.
En Los Estados Unidos, la primavera empieza en abril.
In Uruguay, winter begins in March.
En Uruguay, el invierno empieza en marzo.

The following are the most common ways to inquire as to the date in Spanish.

In Spanish, the "first day of the month" is expressed by saying "el primer día" (the first day) or simply "el primero" (the first).

Today is Monday, the first day of June.
Hoy es lunes, el primer día de junio.
Today is Monday, the first of June.
Hoy es lunes, el primero de junio.


All other days of the month are expressed with cardinal numbers using the following construction: date + de + month (+ de + year). Consider the following examples.

What is the date today?
¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy?
Today is Wednesday, January 21.
Hoy es miercoles, el veintiuno de enero.

What is the date today?
¿A que fecha estamos hoy?
It's Saturday, April 22.
Estamos al sabado, el veintidós de abril.


The American way of writing the "short form" date is month + day + year. In Spanish, it's written day + month + year. Review the following examples.
